The time has come, The Tanks have opened!
This is the first stage of the expansion of the Tate Modern and let me tell you something, it is looking pretty good! The new space now open to the public is divided into three sections: ‘Live’, ‘Commission’ and ‘Collection’. The industrial look promoted by bare concrete walls and high ceilings bring a whole new dynamic into how the Tate is now able not only to show art but allow viewers to engage with it. Gone are the days of overpriced retrospectives focusing on one sole artists crammed into a maze of interconnected white cubes! We the viewers are now free to roam these new venues and encounter works of such artists as Sung Hwan Kim which could only be shown and work adequately in such surroundings.
This is a promising start for this expansion. A direction towards the multidisciplinary and the commission based hyper structure which the Palais de Tokyo in Paris has also taken, is probably a trend the Tate has set when opening the Turbine Hall. Hopefully these are only the first examples of such projects that institutions around the world are going to treat us with.
Sung Hwan Kim is on until 28 October
